As part of my role as associate artistic director for Young Identity, I had the pleasure of directing three short films from their talented cohort. The films were showcased as part of the ‘Push series cinema screening, commissioned for HOME Manchester Push Festival 2021.
‘Fatihah’ written and performed by Nasima Bee
‘Fatihah’ is an Arabic word which means ‘opening’, and looks at the deeply personal and intimate exchanges of loss and losing. Nasima explores the devastation of grief whilst celebrating the silence that memories hold in the place of the missing.
‘WHO’ written and performed by Jardel Rodrigues
‘WHO’ interrogates power, who has it, and what they do with it both introspective and visceral.
‘Casting Godot’ written and performed by Frankie Blaus
‘Casting Godot’ explores the orphaned experience of heritage and memory. What happens to the evolving child whose early formative years are embedded with the loss of a parent? The speaker attempts to re-imagine the conflicting oral histories within their family that serve as their only knowledge of their mother's death.
